Speaker Robert Nash will talk about the “Greatest Air Battle”, the air battle over Dieppe on 19 August 1942, eighty years ago this month. You know the history of the land battle – the Second Canadian Division, including Winnipeg’s Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, and some British and allied troops, landed at the French coastal port of Dieppe, where they met much stronger than expected German resistance. After a vicious battle, the remaining troops evacuated on their landing craft, leaving behind 3,367 dead, wounded, or prisoners of war, of an initial Canadian force of about 5,000. The air battle is less known, and this is the story Robert Nash will tell. Over seventy RAF squadrons were committed to the operation, as well as some American squadrons, against about 260 aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe. Part of the RAF total included No 402 “Winnipeg Bears” Squadron, RCAF, which flew several sorties over Dieppe.
