(WINNIPEG, MB – February 3, 2022) – As temperatures rise this spring, Manitobans will have an exciting new attraction to explore.
Slated to open over the May long weekend of 2022, the newly rebuilt Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada (RAMWC) is excited to welcome visitors to its state-of-the-art facility.
This LEED certified building will feature 24 aircraft for its opening, an interactive Experience Flight exhibit, a Galaxy Exploration Zone for children, a stunning observation area overlooking the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport runways, attractive and fully equipped meeting spaces and classrooms, and much more.
“The new facility will be more than a building,” explains Dr. Arthur V. Mauro, former chair of the Winnipeg Airports Authority and Honorary Co-Chair of the RAMWC capital campaign cabinet. “The Museum will represent repayment of a debt that this community owes pioneers of air travel and will also represent our dedication to the future of aviation. In short, it will enshrine our past and be a window on the future.”
Located on Treaty No. 1 Territory, the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, Lakota, and Dene Peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation, the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada is committed to Truth and Reconciliation, and to creating a safe space for this to occur. Through storytelling and education, the Museum seeks to honour and commemorate the history of Indigenous Peoples and aviation in Western and Northern Canada while engaging with the complex history of travel, trade, and relationships in these regions.
While originally slated to open in mid-March of 2022, the Museum has decided to postpone the opening date, primarily due to pandemic-related supply chain delays.
“Despite the delays, we are by no means in a holding pattern,” CEO Terry Slobodian says. “Exhibit installations continue, our exterior signage is going next week up, and our team is eagerly moving ahead as we look forward to welcoming visitors.”
